| "The Friends"
were set up In July 1999. It is a voluntary environmental organisation
whose members strongly believe that the woodland should be preserved,
protected and improved so that future generations can enjoy its natural
beauty.
The Group’s Aims
• To protect, preserve, maintain, restore and improve the natural
beauty of Holywell Dene by involving volunteers from the local community
in all aspects of the group’s work.
• To foster a sense of ownership by the local community by improving
access to and awareness of the Dene, so that everyone can enjoy this rare
area of woodland.
• To work in partnership with
local and national organisations, agencies and individuals, the landlord
and tenants of areas adjacent to the Dene.
Activities
The range of adivities of "The Friends" is such that it should
include something within the capabilities of everyone who would like to
help.
• Strenuous manual work
including path improvement, fencing, bridge building clearing paths of
overgrown vegetation and fallen trees and clearing rubbish from the Burn.

Family
Fun Day
• For the family and young
people especially there is litter picking from the woodland, planting
trees and shrubs, collecting and growing trees from seeds and simply looking
listening and taking photographs in the Dene and reporting the results.
• Family Fun Days have
offered many opportunities for "Friends" to assist. Making cakes
or sandwiches, helping serve the refreshments or manning a stall. Creating
posters and signs or putting up and taking down tents.
• As with any organisation there is always administration. Publications
have to be word processed and delivered to "Friends" doors,
perhaps you could come up with artistic ideas for our publications or
become a Committee Member.
As the woodland recovers over the coming years, it is
likely that some tasks will cease while others take their place. One thing
is certain, there will always be jobs to do.
